SILFRA SNORKELING

Snorkel between Continents in Silfra

Snorkeling in Silfra is a transcontinental once-in-a-lifetime experience. The guides of this tour will show you what National Geographic has described as one of the top dive sites in the world, in the historically rich Thingvellir National Park, part of the famous Golden Circle route. You’ll find out for yourself as you glide between tectonic plates floating on pure, filtered glacial meltwater and tick off your bucket list the ultimate tour with breathtaking underwater views and only available in Iceland in the world’s clearest waters.

What makes Silfra the ideal spot for snorkeling?

It’s primarily the visibility, besides the fresh groundwater filling the fissure, the thrill that comes with swimming between continental plates and its remote geographical placement that evokes unbelievable curiosity. The fissure has around 100-metre visibility and the water comes from the glacial melt water filtering through volcanic rock from Langjökull glacier.

The water is absorbed by the volcanic soil and further percolates through the volcanic rock, sand and ash, making it pure and increasing its visibility. With such clarity under water the snorkeling experience will only be more enjoyable. This becomes an opportunity that no water sports enthusiast wants to miss out on.

If you happen to be a seeker of underwater adventure, Silfra is the destination to head towards where the thrill of your life awaits you beneath the water. Fondness for water sports can never find a more fun-filling and fulfilling jump!

The over 100-metre visibility of water allows visitors to bathe in the magical blue light, and become a spectator to the marvel of marine life. The unique geological conditions prevailing in Silfra make it one of the world’s top five diving sites in the world.

TEMPERARTURE

As the water in Silfra is very cold, you must wear waterproof dry suits that keep you dry and your body warm. These suits are made from a special, thick material that is designed to effectively resist the freezing cold temperatures. You will need to wear a rubber strap around your neck to ensure that the water does not get inside the suit. The tour company will provide you with these suits.

To increase your thermal insulation and comfort we recommend that you bring your own long sleeved thermal undergarment. Please bring it to wear under your dry suit. The suit is filled with air which, therefore, keeps it completely dry and also allows you to float on the surface of the water.

The dry suit might feel heavy as you put it on but as soon as you hit the water that feeling will disappear. You will also be given diving goggles, a breathing pipe, a hood, a pair of gloves, and flippers.
